Canadian Rockies Hiking and Adventure Mom

With a hiking carrier full of tarot chips, coconut buns, and macadamia nuts. It’s always about the snacks when we hike.

This was a super short hike with the toddlers but it was a big adventure for them. Me too actually as being in these types of spaces does make me panic a little. 😂

I always create our trips around nature and adventure. This trip is quite unique as the theme is healing so it’s a lot of relaxation for a mental health reset too. You can drop any questions you might have on Kauai with kids in the comments and I’ll make sure my blog covers it.

It could be the hormone changes, the postpartum struggles, or mental health dips. Nature will hold you wherever you’re at.

I find hiking acts like the reset button for my mental health. These backcountry trips slow everything down and create a sense of balance again.

So here’s the deal! Our trails do have group size limits as suggested by the Parks and I cap my meetups to ensure we don’t go over the limit. Each trail is different, we mostly choose trails with a 15-30 person limit. We all each purchase our own park passes. We rarely hike in one group and some of just like chilling in the parking lot because we are out of the house. Sometimes we just sit and nurse in nature together and eat our snacks. Respecting rules and wild spaces is very important to me and my community. I don’t count babies as a hiker because we carry them up the mountain. However, folks reporting me do. We’ve never had hundreds of babies at one hike but I mean that would be pretty amazing if we ever had that many moms wanting to hike with their baby. We need to celebrate moms and create postpartum healing supports in nature together. We are just out here bonding with our babies, admiring nature, and loving connecting with other like-minded moms.

Anyway, my meetups and page have sparked some attention. So I’ve decided to expand our meetups beyond my local one so that moms have a chance to connect with other outdoor mom friends too. Just join your local group page and watch our events calendar @kidswhoexplore for hikes that our ambassadors host. We are working on so many new areas so check back if you don’t have hikes in your area yet.

I’ve poured my heart into creating the baby hiking classes to help postpartum moms find connection and the outdoors during maternity leave. This program is expanding to new locations with the help of our Ambassador team. ✨

This class was about forming connections and overcoming the intimidation of getting outdoors. We did a round of speed dating hiking mom style to connect and we went over the 10 essentials, emergency items, and chatted about being prepared for survival. Connection with like-minded moms takes the intimidation out of hiking with your baby. When you have other moms to go with, it feels so much more manageable and fun. Friendships in motherhood are so important and I’m so honoured to get to witness so many beautiful friendships form here. 🥹

The gratitude that I have for having my boys by my side is endless. They got into all the snacks but they add so much energy to everything we do.

Those adventure babies get bigger and develop a love for exploring and outdoors on their own terms. So don’t say I didn’t warn y’all. 😅

It happened before I was ready, he was stern about setting up the tent his way. He would spill our filtered water before we got back to camp. He would demand to hike solo. Never even asking for a lift. He’s 4 but been on these trails in my tummy and as a baby for so long now. He likes to help plan for our backpacking trips and see the trail maps. He’s usually got a long list of things he will do once at camp. He packs his own toys along and lives for camp food and goodies that we make for our trips. The chores and keeping us safe at camp is his favourite thing. Bear safety is his top priority, always.

I always knew that I wanted to raise my kids with a lot of help from Mother Nature. Getting to see this magic of how being in the outdoors has influenced him has been incredible. You can create memories like this too.

I opened the viewing window into my outdoor motherhood life to help parents and babies find connection with nature and each other. I feel more safe here on the trail than many other places with my baby. We’ve hiked up many summits and done hundreds of hikes together. The Canadian Rockies is an epic place to hike and the scenery looks very intense but I can assure you, my trail choices are family-friendly and within my skill set. However, I’m not going to justify my motherhood journey and instead I’m going to keep sharing our love for the outdoors and family adventures. Babies and kids belong out here too.

I have a lot of conversations with moms here that they’ve been judged harshly for taking their babies outdoors and on adventures. I have received hate from the internet to the extreme here for my lifestyle and choices. I’ve triggered the internet more times than I can count.

Always read your carrier manuals and always check-in on development milestones with your healthcare expert prior to attempting this transition with baby.

This is my experience with transitioning my baby to hike on my back from being so comfortable riding on the front.

Postpartum on the trail has brought me closer to healing after losing our baby.

The reality is a lot of effort goes into preparing for our adventure days. I always try and organize the night before but somehow it still feels chaotic. My kids do help and I’m grateful for that. Sometimes they do have a lot of other demands so it can delay us in getting out the door. 😅

We always bring a snack bag filled with charcuterie and bars.

I am filming the behind the scenes of my adventures to show how we get out the door. I do my best to keep activities organized into bins in the garage but things always end up mixed up or items on our gear list get forgotten.

I was late to the trailhead for our community hike so I sent the group on and didn’t really know how far we’d make it. Recovering from early pregnancy loss is unpredictable and I didn’t know how I’d feel up the trail. Just taking one day at a time and feeling all the feelings along the way.

Hello fellow outdoor lovers! Thank you for being here. I am Adrianna and I am a hiking mom here in the Canadian Rockies. I love taking my babies on all my adventures and sharing our journey here with you. My husband is a Plant Doctor and I have spent my career in Finance. My love for the outdoors led me to dream up Kids Who Explore and I am so grateful for my position of CEO. On a given day, I wear many hats within the organization. I am currently on maternity leave from my corporate job with my two sons, Turner (2), and Nash (0).
